BEST Feature: Beader Bubbe

Meet Agnes. Mother of five...Grandmother to six. Busy lady! She hopes that after retirement she will have more time to create. I think we can all relate to that one :D And without work, she won't have her co-workers snatching up her pieces before she can list them on Etsy for us!

So on to the goodies...which is the best part of a feature....

Patch: Etsyblogger's Blogger of the Month!

I can't believe August is just about over! And that I almost missed this post! Patch has been a very active member of the Bloggers this past year or so - and a busy one too! She has 3, yes THREE! - shops. A supply shop, a vintage shop (which has a large sale going on now!!!) and of course her handmade jewelry shop.

Gotta love this piece...

Look at the detail on this top...so beautiful...

I just love these paper flowers she creates...these are from lottery tickets...too cool!!

I know from experience that her pieces are fantastic! I have a set of rings I gave to my niece, she just adores them! Perfect for her girly tomboy self. Yup, you read that right too. She's a perfect mix of both worlds. Isn't the ring awesome...and the packaging rocks too!!

Speaking of blend of worlds...Patch is from Thailand and blends in with our largely US group just wonderfully. It's been neat reading her posts & forum threads since she joined. She is starting to use our slang even :) You can read her posts on one of her, um, yup, I believe it is another three...blogs. She has one that is great for all things bridal. Another for the knitting world. And yet another for, well, her jewelry & everything else.

This is her newest doll on her Crochet & Knit blog - sounds like there will be more on the way :)

So read on, browse her shops, and just enjoy! I think I got them all :P

Etsyblogger of the Month: Beaded Tail

We're making tails wag one bead at a time!

Sharla may run Beaded Tail, but Sadie, Angel and Isabella run her home. And rightfully so. These adorable pets have such a fantastic mommy in Sharla. They were all rescued by her and found a home where they are treated like royalty. Just check out her blog to see it in action. You can stroll with Sadie and watch the birdies with Angel and Isabella.

Sharla continues to help animals outside of her home through her jewelry and collar covers. These fantastic & often pet themed beauties are made with animals in mind. A portion of all sales proceeds benefiting animal awareness causes. Just think, any of these pieces could help a cute little furbaby.

Saturday Shop: The Taffy Box

*** What is the name of your shop

The Taffy Box
. I use to work in a school where I would bring my handcrafted jewelry items bagged and ready to sell to fellow teachers. I carried them around in an actual old cardboard taffy box from a beach vacation in north Carolina. They would often say "When are you going to bring in The Taffy Box again?" That is how I named my shop.

You can also find her here:
Twitter: Facebook:

*** What do you create?

Hand stamped and personalized jewelry and accessories for the whole family from Grandparents, Mommy, Dad, kids, even pets!

*** What are your favorite materials to work with?

Sterling Silver, Copper, Gold filled

*** What are you working on now?

I am making a lot of cuff links & money clips these days for wedding party gifts as well as graduation gifts such as tie-tacs and necklaces for teens.

*** How long ago did you open up shop?

2007, but I really threw my heart and soul into it last year when I was fighting cancer. It is what kept me sane and focused on something I find enjoyable. In turn, I was able to really grow the business beyond my wildest dreams and quit my teaching job!

***Do you have another job aside from your shop?

I am a part time counselor with Network Of Strength's breast cancer hotline on an IP phone from my home, as well as a patient rep. for a chemotherapy drug company.

*** How to you advertise? Any tips in this area?

I do several giveaways per year at mommy blog type sites as well as advertising buttons on blogs of friends. I give my business card to everyone I see or talk about my business with. You never know when they might end up needing a gift for someone, and remembering me! I have brochures printed up and use those at craft fairs and shows along with photographs of my work.

*** What 2 things have you learned since starting to sell your items?

You can make most of the people happy most of the time but you can't make all of the people happy all of the time. For that occasional unhappy person, I try to not take it personally, and to learn from the experience. Then I move on. I do not dwell in the negative. I have also learned that it takes time to grow a business. I chose not to go into debt to grow my business but rather to let the business pay for itself and grow as I could afford to.

*** Show off your craft/work space

You don't want to see my craft work space! You would be shocked how messy it is. I am one of those people who can find anything I am looking for in my own mess. It consists of a small utility room in my basement, a table and several organizing drawer units and a covered pool table. I have yet to master the organizing part! My goal is to someday list and sell all of my stashed beads and supplies I will never end up using.

*** Do you have any method for pricing you would like to share?

I see what other items are selling for on line and try to be in the "range". Maybe a bit lower to stay competitive but I have also found that raising prices sometimes makes the buyers believe they are more valuable and they are willing to pay the higher price! Online sales work that way, since the buyer can't physically touch and feel the item, so subconsciously they base their idea of how valuable it is on the price. It's a combination of eyeing the competition plus my own cost and profit ratio too.

***Do you have any plans for your shop in the coming year/season?

I recently started using more gold fill and combination of metals such as mixing silver and copper, and I also bought a texturizing mallet which I would like to use to create some pieces that have more depth and contrast to them.

***Any funny crafty mishap stories?

Well, the mishaps happen from time to time, like a misspelled name and I always manage to catch it before shipping the item, but some of the funnier things that have happened are when in one day there seems to be a hot ticket selling item. I just can't hardly list them fast enough like the day when over 13 people ordered collar stays and they were 13 different customers from 13 different addresses - "Where are they finding me?" I would ask myself! That happened once with guitar picks too. I have no idea how it happens.

***Tell us one random thing about yourself that is not craft related.

I had four children born in less that 5 years. Oh yeah, and they were all c-sections. They are now ages 16 - 21

Blogfire Carnival: Green and Gold

The blog carnival themes to choose from were any combo of necklaces, green & gold or your favorite accessory. I though I would try & look for sets with necklaces since my fave accessory is a bracelet...but most sets were necklaces and earrings. So I will skip over my beloved bracelets & stick with necklaces.
My initial search gave me over 3000 goodies!!! That's a lot of drool to wipe off the keyboard :P Now that I have done all the hard work of looking through such great handmade items, you can just sit back & enjoy...

Mini Monday

If you follow my blog you know that I have been quite absent this past month. So much so that it is no longer "this" month. Hello November. And since I pretty much missed October, that means I missed my blog carnivals and Etsyblogger of the month. And while today's featured artist will not "count" towards my Etsyblogger goals, I am still going to introduce you to October's artist, Made by Melissa. She is a an engineer by day who started crafting as a way to express her creativity. I think many of us can relate to that. She makes wonderful crocheted items and jewelry. Here are some of my faves:

Snowflake Bracelet

Toddler/Baby Blanket

Phoebe the Pretty Little Piggy

This is also the 1st of my Mini Mondays - short little features of other artisans. And yes Etsybloggers, I pilfered the title from our team's blog :)

September's Etsyblogger of the Month: Designs by Vanessa

The birds may be starting to head down south here, but you can still find some adorable ones over at Vanessa's shop.

And don't forget the jewelry...

...or the cupcakes...

Her blog is awesome. Not only fun to look at - she always has fabulous finds to show off - but there are giveaways and interviews going on all the time. It's a must see. And check out her font - I just love fun fonts! I know, I get excited over the little things - but it gives everything such a fun feel.

This is her blog badge....so fun :)

*not sure how to display the code without it turning into another badge - but if you are interested in displaying it on your blog, she has the code up on her sidebar*

Joella and Rae Ann

Let's start of with some pretties from Joella at Always Wired Bead Lady.

You can read up on her works and their inspirations on her blog, Always Wired Bead Lady.

So you know I love jewelry...of the handmade variety at least. And I also love buttons...even as jewelry actually. I have had Wordless Wednesdays of buttons and make many bags decorated with buttons.

But what about blog buttons? I have seen so many cute ones out there & always wondered just where the heck do people find them. Well, I found one place that does customizable ones....The Button Box.

Rae Ann is a stay at home mom like myself who found a fun creative outlet...for profit :) She even does headers and backgrounds. She has a blog also, of course, called Critical Mass where you can learn more about her. Unfortunately, her computer decided to go belly up recently, so she may be a bit behind in posting. I just love her banner text: "Pretending to lose weight - but not my mind- while raising children". Sounds so familiar. Heck, our reading lists are even similar :)

Casto Creations

Elegant jewelry that is handmade is just so beautiful. And to have some of the proceeds go to a good cause, well, that's even better. Casto Creations does both. A recent diagnosis of Leukemia in the family has inspired her to create this beautiful piece of jewelry and help raise funds for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. (click on image to go to purchase this pendant)

You can find more of her work in her Etsy, 1000 Markets and Trunkt shops. These are some of my faves....
