Holiday Hiatus

I have decided to take a break from the computer for the rest of the year. You may see a scheduled post or two, but not likely. I am also taking a break from sewing...pretty much. I may sew something for myself, but that's not work, so it doesn't count. Do you remember the holiday stuff I wanted to make? Well, it didn't happen. I was busy, but with custom orders. I decided to give myself a break & not worry about skipping my list of to-dos since custom orders trump the list.

Lists...since both my boys landed on Santa's good list, tomorrow morning should be fun. I love watching their faces light up when they rip into the goodies under the tree. Hubby was on the good list too...even without the house help that he used to be so good at. We don't really do gifts to each other, we have the boys get us stuff instead. Is a 4 year old helpful with this endeavor? Um, no, not really. So we still kind of get each other stuff :) But on my list for this Xmas...for next year to have more help around the house. Should be easy right? After all, it costs nothing and nobody has to make a trip to the stores. Well see....

...see you soon....

Blogfire: Reflections

This carnival, which I am not late for...for a change...is wide open. It is a look back on 2009. Not sure my melty brain can remember that far back, but I'll give it a go.

see? told you...melty brain..

Crafty/biz wise...I think it was a pretty good year. Although I technically started Tilt in September '08, it wasn't until the start of '09 that it felt started. Sure, I had sold some things in '08 & started the blog, but it was only after a few months online & with teammates from Etsy (my only venue at the time) did I feel like I even had a clue as to what I was doing. When I started, I never made more than one bag of a style. I quickly learned that the look it gave online was too "messy", so I tried to trim down the number of styles. There are a few clearance items that are still trying to find a home and I am still narrowing things down, but I am getting there. Starting 2010 I will only be making backpacks, clutches, my new zippy purse, Janet/Venus handbags, Ann evening handbags, zip pouches and maybe a large hobo'ish bag....hmm, still need to work on the narrowing...but expanding into non-bag items like quilts, table runners, coasters & fabric baskets.

btw...that's my 1st Artfire sale...it was in'09,which is also the year I joined :P

Blog wise...I have been having fun. For a while I was part of a couple Ning groups that helped promote each other. I started my Tilt's Creations blog where I (try) to focus on what I make and leave this blog for my life, family, promoting others & whatever else pops into my head. I've "met" lots of great people through my blogging teams & have learned lots more about computer useage. That may come in handy when I have to go back to work.

Work - that leads me into the icky parts of '09. Financially, we got, um, let's just say it was not good...this blog is family rated after all. My youngest had to go through some speech & physical therapy for a couple years. The first year gave us no problems. But '09 was another story. While his learning to talk & function physically is worth every penny...it turned out to be many more pennies than it was supposed to....like many paychecks more. Thank you United Health Care. You can suck it! Ok, there goes the family rating :P
Then the cherry on top - this year's medical insurance premiums were not taken out all year...so it all came out at once last paycheck..it was now & pre-tax or spread out next year post-tax....huge bottom line difference.
So - end result - I may need to go back to work before we planned. Crossing our fingers & budgeting like fools, maybe we can make it until kiddo starts Kindergarten. We were hoping to wait until 1st grade, but one year early is not too bad.

Family wise...my oldest grew like a weed. He went from this sweet young boy to this taller than me man-boy practically overnight...still sweet though. I tear up just looking at him & how much he has grown - both inside & out. He knows who he is & what he wants way more than I ever did at his age. A mother could not be more proud. He is one fantastic son.
And the little guy? Those therapy sessions really did their job...like a lot. He never stops talking...n.e.v.e.r. And most of what comes out of his mouth is not only amusing & hilarious, but so much older than his years.
I can't wait to see what these two do next year.

I think that's about it. Except for lots and lots and lots and lots of trying to keep up with the everyday & failing miserably. But at least my bags are looking great :)

Flint Handmade Holiday Craft Market 2009

Hey look...it's me :) A rare sighting indeed. I am not a fan of my picture being taken...at least this time my bags were the main characters. Thanks Crystal for taking this one :)

This past weekend was the Flint Handmade Holiday show...and from the stats I was just sent, it was quite a hit! 400+ people during the 6 hour show. And some snowflakes.

This pic also shows my newest set up by way of Ikea. My oldest helped me find some props the other weekend. It worked out pretty well, but is still now quite what I want. Of course if I would just learn not to put everything out...that'd help :P

I Missed It Again!

I do not know what goes through my head every time I jot down the deadline for my blog posts lately....the team ones that is. This has got to be the 4th time I have missed the Blogfire carnival by ONE day! Sheesh. I need a brain overhaul. Maybe I can squeeze one in between sewing, making custom orders, creating Xmas gifts, cleaning, cooking, shopping, paperwork, taking care of the boys...hmmm...maybe I should just be happy with only ONE day late :P

But I am still writing it, even if it does not count. The subject: The Holidays - what do you celebrate/make? We celebrate Christmas - although, hubby and I celebrate different aspects of it. That's what happens when only one half of a couple is religious. But aside from church service, everything is essentially the same. We celebrate life, our family and all those we care about. This year we get to celebrate our (his technically) Great-Grandma's 98th...yes, 98th...holiday season! Wowsers! And she's still spunky - go Grandma!!!

As for what I make...well, that changes every year. A couple years ago I made a Santa & snowman head. Last year there were lots of purses. This year there will be quilts, tree skirts, stockings, felt goodies for the kiddos (I hope) and dessert...always dessert. I still need to decide on the dessert - any ideas?

The sewing stuff I listed, well, it is still in the 'I hope" phase. I, gladly, have a few custom orders I need to complete first. I think next year I will have a cut off date for customs so I have all of December for my own creating. If I do get to it, I plan to make what you see below (clicking on the pics will bring you to the sites of the fabulous artisans I either bought the pattern from or downloaded the tutorial for free)...

Mom's Thanksgiving Gift

I almost posted this on Thanksgiving, but my mom had said something to me that made me think twice in case she peeked in on this blog. So I am sharing it now. Well, I kind of shared it earlier while it was in the making. I am quite pleased with how it turned out. So was she. And bonus - she was not expecting anything. Makes it that much better :)

I designed the table runner myself...I can't call it original exactly since triangles are used like this lots. I decided to make some coaster/trivet/potholder thingies too. They were also a great way to "practice" mitering my corners before I tackled the runner. Quilt corners do not bother me too much since it is wrapped around you when in use. Whereas a runner is displayed for all to see. Although - I think most people look more closely at the yummies placed on the runner than the runner itself. At least at our family feasts :)

back side of coasters

I think I may make some winter/holiday themed runners as well. I also sketched out a tree skirt with a matching pattern. Whether or not I get to it, who knows. I have a messenger bag duo custom order, ornament swap and 6 bag order all due up in a couple weeks. Does not leave much time for the holiday sewing I had in mind for the shop. Maybe I will make them in January in preparation for next year.

Etsybloggers: Favorite Holiday Movie

This month's carnival questions were either about Thanksgiving and your traditions or your favorite holiday movie or special. I just did a blurb on Thanksgiving, so I am going with holiday movie.

As a kid I adored all the claymation movies, the one with the Heat Miser being my fave. But then came A Christmas Story. Nothing can beat that... almost. I love when TBS (I think it's them) plays it for 24 hours straight. I have my own copy on DVD now, so I can pop that in anytime. It is what I trim the tree to :)

Why "almost"? Because of Elf. It does not beat out A Christmas Story as my fave, but it is a close second. So close it is almost a tie. One reason is Zooey, she is one of my fave actresses. It is also sweet, funny & heartwarming...which I only like during the holidays - the heartwarming part. I am not a heartwarming movie kind of gal. Notice the absence of It's a Wonderful Life on my list? I know it tops most people's I know, but not even on my radar.

And okay, I just realized another movie is so very close to the top for holiday movies that I need to give it an honorable mention. Scrooged. The Bill Murray one? Also funny, sweet & heartwarming. And I just love when he gets beaned with the toaster! She is so adorable :)

Which is your fave holiday movie?

Blogfire: Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has always been a big family get together for me. When I was younger we went to my Dad's parents with all his siblings & my cousins. After my grandpa passed we began alternating whose house it was held at. Now we are older & have started families of our own so the big BIG get togethers are not as common. But even our small get togethers are about a dozen big. And I make the desserts. I love experimenting on my family *bwahahaha*. I am not sure what it will be this year, last year I made a cranberry upside down cake (thank you Becca!).

I recently started a new "tradition". Can you really call it a tradition if you just started? And how long until it can be called that? Oh well, I plan to keep going with it. Oh...what is it? I make stuff. Sewing stuff. Fabric stuff. I know, real specific huh? Let's see, so far I have made some stuffed heads for Christmas, a snowman and Santa.

Purses for gifts, of course. An Easter apron for mom.

Another Easter goodie for her were embroidered chickies. This year...MOM - WARNING : DO NOT CONTINUE READING IF YOU WANT TO STAY SURPRISED....I am making an Autumn table runner. I have the sketch and fabrics...I may "reuse" the pattern for other holidays.... assuming it goes well.

A 4 Year old's Version of Cleaning

I just love this kid. He cracks me up everyday. I asked him to clean up the toys he is done with before he moves onto the next. And he did. He wanted to have room to run & play with his blocks, so all the matchbox toys & the pirate ship (they were on an adventure together) had to be cleaned up. It took me a while to figure out why he put them away where he did. He finally told me "but Mommy, this is where you put stuff when you clean the floor and I need to clean the floor to play". He was referring to vacuuming. I did not try to explain the difference, I was having too much fun watching the process.

1st he stacked it all up on the couch

then it was time to run

and run some more

and to top it off...floor angels :)

Woo Hoo! Go Ferndale!

I am so giddy! My son's marching band took first place during the state finals at Ford Field this past weekend! I am so proud of him...of all of them. They put so much of themselves into it and it showed. They were phenomenal! Go Eagles!!!!!

This last pic was from the local newspaper....The Ferndale High School Golden Eagle Marching Band (Jolesch Photography)
The 1st pic was taken last year (same uniform) of my son....couldn't find a close up this year...

Mini Monday

If you follow my blog you know that I have been quite absent this past month. So much so that it is no longer "this" month. Hello November. And since I pretty much missed October, that means I missed my blog carnivals and Etsyblogger of the month. And while today's featured artist will not "count" towards my Etsyblogger goals, I am still going to introduce you to October's artist, Made by Melissa. She is a an engineer by day who started crafting as a way to express her creativity. I think many of us can relate to that. She makes wonderful crocheted items and jewelry. Here are some of my faves:

Snowflake Bracelet

Toddler/Baby Blanket

Phoebe the Pretty Little Piggy

This is also the 1st of my Mini Mondays - short little features of other artisans. And yes Etsybloggers, I pilfered the title from our team's blog :)

Where did October go?

Really, what happened to it? I have been totally MIA when it comes to my blogs. Scratch that, I managed a couple treasury posts on Tilt Treasures (creepy, spooky and devil), a create update on Tilt's Creations and some Wordless Wednesdays. Wooppeee.
I would love to say that I have had so many orders coming in that I just could not tear myself away from the sewing machine. But alas, that was not the case. Nor was it anything exciting.
The first weekend of October I was down near Nashville visiting my brother & his family. It was my new nephew's baptism. Ok, that is kind of a vacation. A vacation from my own family & home...I went with my parents while hubby stayed back with the kids who had school & stuff. It was great going down there - it was the 1st time since they moved last year. I brought my niece a little chef's hat I made...I didn't want her to feel left out.

It was nice to be home again though. Except being sick. Yes, I spent those first 2 weeks of the month under the weather. Nothing major, but enough to not want to do anything.
I did manage to make and list some new backpacks and handbags. I also have 3 out of 4 new purses finished. It has been so long since I've blogged I am not sure if I have showed off my newest batch of clutches either (in both my Artfire and Etsy shops).

I also went to the Bang to a Different Beat Fashion Show for breast cancer awareness in Flint one weekend. The models were sporting some really cool hairstyles by Summerset Salon. Crystal from Flint Handmade took some pics of my & my mom at my table & one of my fave hairdos...

I am hoping to get back into my normal blogging groove next week - or sooner. I have one more day to get my Etsyblogger of the month post up. I have been doing this at the end of the month anyway, so I don't feel too far behind there.
